A wine, a history that never stops evolving.
A winery like BERTANI should be used to such recognitions, but each time feels like the first. Especially when the pinnacle of excellence is marked by a wine like the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, which, in the 2015 vintage, expresses its full identity as a great red wine, a flagship of Made in Italy. The 2015 vintage follows the success of the Amarone Classico Bertani 2013, which last year was the most awarded wine in Italy.
The result of over three thousand days of waiting and work, “the 2015 vintage is the harvest that first felt the impact of climate change and how it influences the nature and composition of the grapes, and therefore, the duration of the so called “messa a riposo”- the resting period,” reports the Bertani technical team.
An exuberant Amarone. “The nose is very expressive and complex, with distinct floral (violet/crocus) and cedar top notes, underpinned by darker, more brawny, earthy and tar tones. On the palate, there is substantial weight, but no heaviness thanks to the lively acidity. The generous, seamlessly textured fruit coats the tannins. Red fruit notes of remarkable purity are followed by a rich mouthful of great liquorice dimension, and a meaty, savoury finish. This is a brooding wine, with a reservoir of savoury, smoky depths, accessible now thanks to the supple tannins and sensual expressivity, but with decades of glorious evolution to come” says Nick Jackson, Master of Wine, who curated the volume THE LIBRARY for BERTANI, which contains the cataloging of 45 vintages over 66 years of history.
The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico BERTANI is a true classic of the denomination, a red that encapsulates tradition, territory, and rural wisdom. 80% Corvina Veronese, 20% Rondinella, are left to rest in a traditional drying room without any forced temperature or humidity control. The resting period on the “aréle” lasts 78 days.
The wine then matures in 50 – 100 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels for 7 years.
The bottle aging lasts about 1 year. The result is a wine of great thickness and depth, both in aromas and on the palate, where the alcohol finds its ideal companions in acidity and refined tannins.
A wine that, in these days, enters the market and marks its entrance under the sign of excellence.
