The 2011 Quinta do Vesuvio has a primal bouquet with heady scents of macerated dark cherries, boysenberry jam and a slight fug of alcohol that should be integrated by the time of bottling. The palate is very rounded with sweet ripe tannins, plenty of raisin-tinged black fruit, and delicate touches of cracked black pepper and shaved ginger on the cohesive finish. Bright, deep ruby. Knockout perfume nose combines blackberry, blueberry, licorice and violet, conveying an impression of sweetness and energy. Savory and gripping on the palate, with a primary sweetness to the fresh black cherry and dark berry flavors. Wonderfully smooth already and very rich and long on the aftertaste. Will rely as much on its sound acidity as on its well-integrated tannins for longevity. (4/ 2014)
